In our new three-part documentary series for ABC, we follow the journeys of people from across the Pacific as they travel to Australia to work through the main fruit and vegetable picking season. Capturing the realities of being far from home and working in rural Australia, The Season shares the stories of seasonal workers from Vanuatu, Tonga and Solomon Islands, their dreams, and the challenges discovered throughout the harvest season.

It’s the start of the Season. Hope is in the air as members of Vanuatu’s national women’s cricket team learn to balance new work schedules as seasonal workers in Australia with training for their first-ever tournament on the global T20 stage. Welfare officer, Mama Sue, shows newcomers the ropes, while returning workers from the Solomon Islands and Tonga hope this season will be better than the last.
With the harvest in full swing, bad weather wreaks havoc in Shepparton and Stanthorpe. Everyone is feeling the pressure. Working day and night shifts, Rachel and Vicky struggle with training, while Selina has second thoughts about going to the world cup qualifier. A new arrival brings renewed hope. Steve tries to change the difficult situation his crew faces.
The harvest is coming to an end and everyone is getting ready to go home. As Mama Sue helps the workers pack, she is sad to see them leave. Jojo returns to Vanuatu with a new plan, while Steve gets an unexpected surprise. Selina, Rachel and Vicky go to Abu Dhabi with their teammates hoping to make history.
Behind the scenes
The Season was filmed over 10 months in Vanuatu as well as three different parts of Australia, including the majestic granite belt of Queensland, the beautiful beaches of New South Wales, and the vast apple orchards of Victoria.
